Chapter I - Systematics
The Wolf (Canis Lupus - Linné 1758)
I.1 Abstract
This chapter deals with the knowledge of the relationships of the
caniformia (a subgroup of carnivores). Beginning with the Miacoides as oldest members of
that branch of carnivora that includes the wolf (Canis lupus - Linné 1758) as well.
Following the historical background the living genera of the canidae and the species of
canis will be named and their relationships displayed visually. The subspecies of Canis
lupus are named and the Canis rufus is mentioned.
Finally a short classification of the Gray Wolf and a map of distribution ranges of all
subspecies, the red wolf and canis lupus familiaris dingo are given.
