On ecology and behaviour of wolfs
you will find a waste amount of pages around the world wide web containing at least basic information.
If you want to take a deeper look you will find only a very small number of them remaining. (A list of them below)
About 2005 together with my dear friend Wiebke Pandikow a short version of such a listing was created and brought to paper.
"The wolf - Ecology and behaviour" (Originally german "Der Wolf - Ökologie und Verhalten") reached a length of 56 pages (sized DIN A4).
It focused mainly on the work of Hendryk Okarma and Erik Zimen, the two experts on ecology of european and behaviour of captive wolfs.
In the progress the amount of time given to add personal data, gained during observation of the behaviour of omega ranked wolfs in captivity
and knowledge of the polish and german wolfs, was taken from us, so we had to keep it out.
Partly to make use of this data. Maybe to add my name to the list of good wolf pages.
At least to work on the topic again I re-read some of the better books about wolfs, wrote down some notes and planned maps of distibution and other grafics for this projects.
So that's why I started recollecting my materials and translating them to english.
The current result is visible here
Links
- The most central collection of mainly ecological data
- Great collection of more general information on wolves
- Imagesource of the wolfpark (pictures of Monty Sloan, the most famous wolf photographer)
- Bilingual page of the german wolf association
- The most interesting project, but sadly hard to find...
- An older page for wolfs. Quiet the best german one so far.
- A polish association collecting ecological data and helping with farmers. Rather good are the seminars. Few information. (EN/ DE/ PL)
Books about wolves
German books
- A modern classic on the general behaviour of wolves and a great ressource for everyone looking for european wolf-men-history and especially behaviour of captive individuals and packs.
-
My personal favorite and offen called the best book on wolf ecology
specially in Europe.
Hendryk Okarma is a polish ecologist working on the influence of wolves on ungulates and the wolf-men-relationship of his homecountry. - A classic for wolf ecology this time from a russian biologist. Despite the age of this work it still contains countless useful information on the accumulation of wolves to different bioms.
-
In the first half of this book Trumler introduces the genera of canidae and their evolution.
The second part is about hybrids of different species of Canis and Dogs (Canis lupus familaris).
Sadly this book is hard to find in modern book stores. My own copy was printed in a limited edition. - A NDR report about german wolfs. This is a big source about the rediscovery of wolfs in Germany, problems and solutions.
-
A great collection of myths, tales and stories about wolfs.
English books
- This is only a picture book. But since it is done by the best wolf photograph I've ever known and written so good it is amoung my favourite books.
- That recent book about wolves (and red wolves) was written by the two leading wolf experts. It is the most up-to-date book about wolf ecology available so far and the most scientific too.
- L. D. Mech is working with wolves for many years and one of the worlds leading experts for wolf ecology. Famous are is his work with the Isle Royale packs. He cooperated with Zimen and Boitani in Italy and wrote a number of papers about northern American wolves.
Magazin (German only)
Radinger, E: Wolfmagazin
The one and only german magazin for canides available. Since 1991 a
reliable source of information on wolfs and there closer relatives in
central Europe.
An additional part about international reports on wolfs can be found on the last pages.
